Now that I got my XL T-shirt in the mail for my second place unpainted porch, I better get that done. I need some help finding the right paint. The porch is solid df t&g. It has some exposure to the sun. I am afraid with the traffic and the sun it will start pealing up in a couple of years. Are there any painters out there that advice me on what paint and primer to use on this deck. |

PaBull, I’m a stain and tung oil guy, but I think I would go by a couple of different paint stores, ie. Sherwin Williams, Benjamin Moore, etc, and get their advice. See where they agree and go with one of those products. -- Tim - http://www.tmuli.com |

Thanks Tim, you are always there with some good advise. I will check out the sites and make my rounds in town, good point. Coming back to the tung, would that be a good primer? |

It would help as a preservative, but it really wouldn’t do anything for paint adhesion. A lot of paints and varnishes have a little tung oil in them. I’m sure the paint guys will tell you to use an oil based primer on your porch, which you can put over the tung, once it’s had some cure time. -- Tim - http://www.tmuli.com |

As you can see, there is an oil based primer on the wood, but it has been 9 months or so, so some started to flake. I am planning scrape and sand this, but if the primer is on the wood well enough, could I go over this with tung, or forget about the tung thing, because there is primer on the floor already? |

I might go ahead with the tung oil, if you’re going to sand all of the old primer off. It won’t soak in where there’s primer. It might be a little overkill, since the porch is mostly covered, and your board ends are not sticking out in the weather, but if it’s in the budget, then it’ll give you some peace of mind about the wood being well protected. Your finish coat of paint will give a lot of protection to the wood. -- Tim - http://www.tmuli.com |

You know, just for the sake of experimenting, you might thin some tung oil down to 50:50 with some mineral spirits and do a test piece, to see how well the Douglas Fir soaks it up. Being a soft wood, it may not soak enough up to make a difference. Just a thought. -- Tim - http://www.tmuli.com |

I will do this. I will keep you posted. I will start using the 50:50 on my cabinets too. This should help with penetrating. |

Thanks Mr Trim, I will check if we have a Sikkens around here, or check if they do online stuff. And what is pricey, most of the cost is labor “specially when you do it yourself”. |

Hey, Pa, (I love being able to do that. When I was in the Navy, I was about 8 – 10 years older than most of the guys I served with, so I picked up the nick name “Papa”.) Did you ever try out the tung oil on the Douglas Fir? -- Tim - http://www.tmuli.com |

Well, I was going to finish the porches myself, but with everything else that i need to do, I decided to hire the painting out. Because of that and because I have already paint on the porch, I will not use the tung oil. It is different when you do it yourself. I went to a local paint store and they said a water base primer is just as good as an oil base. I don’t trust those guys. Here in California it is very hard to find good paint. The oil base Polyurethane I bought for my floor, I had them ship it to a customer in Utah, because in California you can only sell it in quarts. Maybe I need to do the same with my porch paint…. |
