Topic tags/keywords: finish question knotty pine

I put new windows in my basement and needed to replace the pine jambs and casing. I am now needing to match the finish to the existing walls. This paneling was put up in the 50’s or 60’s and I assume that a orange or amber shellac was used, but I am not sure. Any ideas??? The picture is of the paneling in the basement.

I would guess that you are right about the amber shellac from the way it looks in the pic. The best way to be sure is to get some scrape notty pine and experiment. Also if the panels were hung that long ago, you may want to leave the wood in the sun for a couple of days to get the aged look.

Thank you for the input Aubster. I installed the new jambs and casing about 1 week ago and think I will let them sit unfinished for another week. I also have a scrap to test the amber shellac on.

You might also take a scrap piece and a piece of the old material to your local paint store and ask them to match it up. Also, ask them what type of finish they would recommend, or tell them what type you are planning to use. The combination of the stain and finish should lead to a color match.

Good luck and hope to see the finished photos soon.
