Topic tags/keywords: resource shop plan

Hello folks , I’m new here.

I finally pulled a permit today to start building my home shop.

When they asked about the materials and construction I kind of gave them a general idea but now comes the crunch for me.
I need to get some kind of plan done up and get cracking.
I wanted to use sketch up but I am not getting too far with that. Is there any plan out there ( already done) for a shop that I could import into sketch up and kind of play with to figure out how this software runs?

I mucked with it last Sunday but it still has me baffled.

Cheers
Bob

I’m pretty lost too, when it comes to sketchup. You might check out your local Staples store. I picked up one of those $9.95 computer programs that lets you do building layouts and such. I’m thinking that maybe Finewoodworking.com had a downloadable shop planner once upon a time. It even had tool templates that you could move around the shop.

Unless you are dead set on sketchup, you could go to Menards (or whatever the Canadian version is) and use the touchscreen computers they have there to choose from a bunch of pre-build plans that are adjustable by size or “build” one from scratch using their program. They usually also have some packaged plans that are like $10 that have most of the drawings you’d need for your permits. You can probably draw it up like a garage with basic electrical service to get your permits and then later finish the interior up.

For sketchup you can get prebuilt components like doors and windows from http://sketchup.google.com/bonuspacks.html or sites like formfonts.com

Zach, I am not unwilling to look at all options.
I just heard so much about sketch up that I figured several plans maybe available to get me started.
That doesn’t seem to be the case on further investigation.

Mrtrim, Bob Babcock has forgotten more about auto-cad and sketch up than most people .
I can’t ask him to shove me thru this hole.
At worst I will get out the check book and pay a pro.
I just wanted to be sure it was something I couldn’t do for myself.

Thanks for input guys
I am still figuring out what’s going to work here.

Mrtrim, can you point me to the URL that the download came from?
If not I can PM you with and address if the files are not too large for you to e-mail.
I hate to put you to the trouble.
I will do a serach under both Shaun and Brad first to see what I can come up with.
Thanks very much for the input.

Hi Bob. I’m new here too. I’m just wondering how your shop is progressing. One thing to remember- my wife has called a stand alone shop a garage in the past. What’s up with that? bbqking

Hi bbqKing:
We are at the site prep stages now and the lumber is ordered. I got a framer to help with the frame next week.
I am still trying to locate the property line pins and have a guy comming in next week with a scope to find them and a buried abandoned gas line I hope to pressurize and resurrect.

I have been removing my square foot gardens (5 in total) and moving them and the soil.

I have be hauling pea gravel for the foundation from work all week in 5 gallon pails .
Did I mention I am also replacing a 10,000 sq ft roof on my building along with this little task.
