Topic tags/keywords: forced air mini split hvac heating cooling heat

We have a 768 square foot cottage here in Northern California, and have a single wall heater in the middle of the house. We heat less than we should, so have some mold issues, and have a window air conditioner that we toss in for a couple of weeks every summer.

Charlene has been staying with her parents down in Fresno and is convinced that the forced air there is giving her all sorts of coughing problems. Dust in the ducts and so forth.

So I thought “well, what about hydronic systems?”, and looking at using hydronic for cooling led me to back to mini-split systems like I have in my workshop.

We’ve had a couple of quotes for forced air in the $8,500 to $11,000 range, which always seemed high to me. 4 head mini-split systems seem to be in the $2,500 to $4,500 for the hardware range, I can run the wiring and put up the wall mounts and I’m pretty sure $4k to $8.5k is enough to hire someone to do the coolant connections and charge the system.

(And, oddly, it looks like the system at the cheaper end of that range, the Gree, has the best air filtration options…)

Anyone got experience or opinions on the multi-head mini splits, or opinions on forced air vs mini splits?

Thanks!
