Topic tags/keywords: landscaping finishing flooring refurbishing restoring remodeling planning decorating hammer floors foundation concrete passageway deck patio outdoor space question

Hello everybody, I am Roz and have been using Lumber jocks for some time. This is my first foray into Home Refurbishes.
My wife and I are restoring an 1860’s home and I want to create a brick paved patio in the small area between the house and my shop. In this patio I would like to set a mill stone. I have not found one that I felt I could afford.

My idea is to make a stone from concrete. What I don’t know is how to finish the concrete to make it look like natural stone and how best to make the required groves in the surface. I would like the concrete to resemble granite, sand stone or other natural material.

Do any of you have recommendations?

There is a material called hypertufa that would probably be appropriate for you project. It is a lighter mix of concrete, perlite and peat moss. A good tutorial can be found at

PutmanEco,

Thanks for the reply and link. I hadn’t heard of hypertufa.

Hi roz,

How’s your brick paved patio? Have you finished it yet?

Actually James I just started on it yesterday. There have been A/C Unit installations, Cart building, Woodworking orders to fill, Insulation of the house completed, gardening and lots of other things that took priority. So now we are starting on it just when the outside temperatures are in the 90’s. Here we go. Thanks for asking.

Hey, thanks for asking I took pics to post and forgot it. I was trying to make a poured concrete replica of a mill stone but managed to fine one. I got the patio done about two weeks ago. I post pics. Thanks for the website Mattodoors.

Roz, the product you are looking for is called Jewel stone by Durock. However, there is a high learning curve to get the look you want. Here is the site you can contact regarding the supplies. http://www.brockwhite.com/0p45c265/concrete-stains-stamps/
Here is the PDF explaining a few of the steps. http://www.durock.ca/spec/Jewel%20Stone.pdf
Good Luck

Try adding imprinted textures like sea shells, well, maybe not seashells, but anything relevant that you can imprint with.

Hey everybody,
Thanks for your input. UnionLabel I appreciate the websites and Houston the texturing idea may help too. I have done a little with that making stepping stones using plants and other objects to create patterns in the surface.
I have finished the Patio and did not have to make a concrete mill stone as I was given a broken one which worked very well. I posted it as a project on this site check it out and tell me what you think.
Now I have to do the driveway and come up with a porous material strong enough to drive on that will allow water to pass through it. Maybe the Jewel stone will work for that? I’ll check it out.
