I recently bought my first home and could not wait to get started on the remodeling. I have been woodworking for around 10 years and just started with construction. I picked the Den because it was going to be the least used room and would be a gateway to the kitchen. I tore down the panneled walls and put up drywall and new insullation. I tore down the cieling and put in beadboard with my own design of crown modling. I knocked the fireplace down and built a new one to the ceiling with new framing, cement board and veneer stone.
The mantel is a slab of Cherry from Thomas Edison’s phonograph factory that was originally one of the floor joists. I am waiting for the weather to get nice again to put in a new sliding door and wood floors.

Great remodel on the fireplace! What kind of stone did you use for the field and hearth?
Looks great!

Pintodeluxe: Thanks for the compliment. I used a veneer stone made by Prestige Stone out of Ohio. I used another manufactured stone used for walkways for the hearth. I used a Quasar masonary blade on my side grinder and it cut like butter and shows no sign of wear.

Norm – I am so intimidate by my fireplace that I just skipped it. Was this your first venture into stonework? It look very well done. The ceiling looks great. You were right on the money when you knocked off those fake beams. The ceiling went from Chintzy to WOW!

Thanks,
MarkTheFiddler: It was my first and I did run into some issues with me being so particular and had a couple stones fall off because I tried to reposition them. I have learned to walk away when problems occur and come back to it later and it really helped with this project.
