This is my solution for the lack of daylight in my garage.
In this part of the world we have long winters and a lack of daylight which can get very depressing and I hated working in the garage because of it .
So the solution was to add some windows but to also keep the garage secure at the same time and keep prying eyes from looking in .
The windows and trim are all made from smart board which is available in 4×8 sheets and easy to work with .
Two coats of latex exterior paint and all done.
I retained the beam above the door and added new framing up to the top wall plate with 2×6 headers above each window and finished the inside .
Now that we have gone Thur a winter I can say this made a big difference in my mood and also added some good curb appeal to the house.

This is a great idea. I will keep it in mind for some of my clients, they are always looking for more light in their garage.

This looks great but wouldn’t it have been cheaper and easier to just put in one new section in your garage door that has windows in it? I am certainly not knocking your work. It looks really good. How did the garage door opener work with a window up there?

HI GRANDPA
The idea was to get some light into the garage and keep it secure which I think this accomplished
on doors with windows it’s easy to break a window and reach in to release the door opener latch and every house has the same look where as this set my house apart I think .
The opener mount worked in well in between the windows , no problem .
Thanks

Thanks for the reply. The home does have a nice look with the windows. Good job.

Great idea and look great too! You don’t see those very often either. I hate that most garages don’t have light… might do this to mine!

For houses which get a lack of direct sunlight, it might be interesting to install screen doors. Though it does let in sunlight, there is also a chance it may invite unwanted glances into your home as well. This is one trade off you have to consider.
