I have an old 3.5 inch shower mixing valve in my rental. I’m having issues with the stems. I just had the cold blow off in my hand with pressure on the line. I would just replace the stem but after alot of looking 3 yrs ago i was able to replace these stems they cost me about 40 -50 with handles. At that time I looked into changing the valve, but I was not able to find any that were the right size. As you can see in the pics the shower is a standalone unit, and the holes for the hot and cold are cut into the plastic. At this point I don’t want to rebuild the shower although that will happen in the future. I’m thinking my easiest and cheapest option would be to get a new mixing valve and cut hole(s) in the shower wall, but i don’t know how to patch the holes so that they don’t leak.
Other then some clean up this is the only thing that can stop a renter from moving in, another reason that i don’t want this to be a long project.
Any ideas of how to address this would be appreciated.

Jim, I believe they sell single knob valves that have a plate that will cover all the current holes in you shower wall. I think you will want to install this from the back side and patch the hole in the drywall. Do a little more shopping and see if yu can find one of these valves. I hate those single control valves but I think our governments has doomed us to use them and learn to like it!! Goof l;uck on this job.

i was able to get a single knob avlve to cover the holes i used some silicone to help seal it up. The backside of this shower is exposed so i just used hose that you would connect the toilet or under the sink. right now im trying to deal with the flaired copper tubing that goes to the shower head. I had a small leak there not sure how to fix it atm but im sure a little research will clue me in.
update i got the shower head in using a shark bite the threaded down on to the mixing valve. The original setup was a copper pipe that was flared. I took it into home depot and they told me that the flare is prolly to big so I went the shark bite route partially cuz soldering something on would get messy with the plastic shower wall.

Great! Sounds like you are on the way. Sounds like your flare was either made too large or tightened too tight causing it to spread. Don’t you like it when a plan comes together?
