Our friend, who does a great deal of sewing, asked me if I could put a couple of shelf’s and a door in a odd cavity left over from a previous alteration. This would give a safe and handy spot to put a couple of very nice sewing machines as well as pieces of current projects, “in the works”.
The problem is that the cavity butts up to an existing wall, meaning that to take anything in or out would mean working at a 45-degree angle to the project. Since the machines are on the heavy side, and the lady of the house is on the slight side, I envisioned a problem in trying to use it, as she requested it be built.
The solution turned out to be a bit quirky and different, but everyone who sees it, seems most intrigued by the working of the “doors”.
The bottom section opens as a standard door, with a full extension slide out shelf to hold one of the machines. This allows the machine to be free of the cavity for ease in lifting.
The top section has a door that pulls down from the top, with the “door frame” actually being a leg that extends to the floor and supports a shelf that extends well out. This allows for the machine to be slid out and easily removed. Also, while in the open position, the shelf is a handy place to hold fabric etc.
It is Gnome approved!
The pictures show this, minus the final coat of paint, as this makes it easier to see the individual parts.

why isn’t that nifty .. and the gnome just makes this perfect!!
I like this idea. I wish I had the space for one so I could hide my sewing machine but still get at it easily
