These are the cabinets I built in my basement at home. We had to boat them in because of the flood. We now have a counter top and a completely working kitchen. After the flood we had no choice, but to move upstairs. It was sort of the perfect time. The cabinets were done, just not all installed and the bedroom was done, even had a bed up there. Kids are all grown so it was just us. Of course they come out, but they had to wait a bit until we had the bottom half cleaned up and new beds again. The flood was in March and my frig quit working a couple months later, so we were living out of a cooler for awhile. That got old real quick. Then the stove fried. We brought in a new stove and frig on wagons. It took 6 of us to get them over the levee and on the wagons and pulled them down the road about a quarter of a mile to our cabin.

Thanks for sharing your home made kitchen, Janice.
It sounds like you are talking back in the time of the pioneers. Wow, quite a story.

Jim, thank you. But I’m still trying to figure out what to do with the tops of them. I’m not finished yet. These pictures don’t show the trim I put up on the walls, but I need to figure out what to do around the top of the cabinets. I originally wanted crown molding, but now I’m not sure what I want up there. We probably should have just mounted them flush with the ceiling and we didnt. My husband thought we should drop them down for crown moulding. I’m not sure that’s what I want up there. I’m hoping this summer I can finish them all the way. Any suggestions???

Janice, I think Crown would be a nice elegant finish to your kitchen cabinets. Great job so far. I can just picture you rafting your lumber to the job site. Thanks, Dan

Thanks Dan, sometimes we go 10 years without a flood, but like 93, 08 was just as bad. We got water in the lower part twice in one year. Then the river has been high ever since. Three years of high water, just like 93. I’m praying for a change this year. I’m praying that we never get wet upstairs in the new room addition. I think we built it high enough. I hope. I need to post a finished picture with the counter top on it. Don’t think I’ve done that yet. I like my cabinets, haven’t been out there in 3 weeks and it’s killing me. It’s been too cold to go out there. Can’t turn the water on when it gets too cold. I’m hoping for a break in the weather soon.
