Repurposed Firewood box

Nothing super spectacular here. Still doing renovations on the house. A murphy bed is done but I won’t post it till we get a mattress in it and it made up.

This is a repurposing of a wood box. Something I put together today. No fancy joinery, just glue and screws. We have a large flat stone fireplace that now has a pellet stove insert in it. The woodbox at the end of the stonework was for putting firewood in. It was never that handy as it only held a couple armloads and we would just carry in wood and put it into the fireplace. When we got the pellet stove a few years ago the last armloads of wood that went into the woodbox stayed there and had been there since.

When the whole house was remodeled we thought light, airy, and sparse. There are no desks to clutter up any longer. The wife makes out the bills and such on the kitchen table and the stuff ends up on the windowsill next to it. Adjacent to the table is the woodbox.

I made a cradle that is anchored into the cement with cement screws. The cradle has full extension drawer slides. the large drawer is about 18” deep, 19” wide and 13” tall. Inside is a sliding tray for bills and the bottom of the drawer has a divider. I’ve been on a roll to use up a lot of the thousands of scrap wood pieces and this is no exception. the sides are oak veneered plywood left over from the murphy bed. The back is white covered mdf from a previous project. The front is cherry left over from building the kitchen cabinets. The bottom is 1/4” plywood left over from the murphy bed. I purchased and installed a decorative applique as the drawer face is large and sparse. The handle flows over the applique. I’ve yet to put any poly on it but that will come later.
Thanks for looking.

That’s the kind of touch that makes a house special. Great idea. Nice that you used scraps. Cherry looks great.
