hi, i’m in the process of refurbishing my fireplace. it has a 6 foot 6in brick front and wood covering to the ceiling. i want to remove all of the covering and replace it with a beautiful 12×24 porcelain tile. these are my questions: i want to replace the wood frame with new wood and decrease the size of the fireplace. how far from the firebox is within code? is it in code to use backer board to cover the wood frame? i really hope to hear from you soon. thanks in advance, golf diva

I’m assuming this is a natural fireplace, i.e. firebrick lined interior, full masonry, no insert. General rule of thumb is to keep all combustibles at 6” away from the side edges and 12” above the to edge of the firebox opening. This is on the face of your fireplace. As for covering up the wood framing above the brick, cement backer is an excellent idea but not required. You’ll have less problems using that rather than using drywall.
Post some pics and we can get a better idea what your looking at.
