I bought my house almost 2 years ago and the upstairs had carpet which was a mess. When we ripped it out we found some 2” wide oak and then for some reason plywood. Seems like the previous owner was thinking of adding a second layer of ply to the subfloor and then maybe add something over?? The adjoining kitchen had the same layer of ply under the linoleum (spelling??).

With the coming of fall weather, the gap underneath the door finally got annoying to the point where I milled a new threshold out of Ipe and installed it. Lessons learned:
1. Despite how hard and dense it is, Ipe actually mills fairly easily.
2. The sawdust stinks, spreads a green (despite the nice color of the wood) dust over everything, and hangs in the air. Definitely open the shop doors and use a respirator.
3. No matter how nicely you prep your work area, if you do finishi...

Okay, so I went to Sears to purchase their wet saw tile cutter, none in stock, it had to be ordered. Several days later we got the automated voicemail that the saw was ready for pick up. I got the saw home and opened it to find that one side of the metal table top was bent so badly that the hinge wouldn’t work. My wife takes it back the next day and they exchange it for a new one. When I opened the replacement, it also had a bent table top but on the other side now. Back to Sears w...

I ripped 2 X 6’s in half, & ran a 1/2” radius on all of the edges.
I also routed a 1/2” deep groove by 1 1/2” wide, to fit the balusters.

I used 2 X 6’s for the railing.

Well, we got the permit, & finally started building it.
The demolishing of the old porch didn’t take too long,
because it was so poorly constructed, it was hanging by a thread.
Whoever built it, they poured the slab over some clay in between the foundation walls,
The clay had settled over time, so there was nothing holding up the slab.
there were two 16” 2×2s just under the threshold, each with about 5 nails in each.

Yesterday I ripped the boards down to 4” wide, the widest I felt that I could reasonably get out of the lumber, and started to mill it into shape. Charlene and I ran it through the planer to take a whisker off and bring it down to 5/8”, cut a 3/8” diameter quarter round on the top in two passes, the first left to right to take off most of the stock, the final cut was a climb cut so I could end up with a smoother surface.
