The house sustained minor damage from wind and water during the hurricanes of the last few years. The outside is now sufficiently repaired. We are finally getting to the task of remodeling the inside.

I posted this blog on LumberJocks about seven months ago. I had to edit it to restore photos (I have changed my photo host) so while I was at it, I thought I would post it here for my first HomeReburbers blog.

I have not been on the site much lately, but I do have a good excuse. I finally found a house to purchase a refurbish. While not a lot of work to do, there will be a few things needing done, primarily patching a few holes and painting.

I learned something new about the finishing of new treated lumber.
They don’t recommend waiting 60 to 90 days for the boards to dry anymore.
They say by staining right away, it slows the drying process, & prevents cracking, & checking.
I relate that to sealing the ends of lumber to prevent checking.

I finally got the 2” X 6” for the balusters.
Photos by Barb.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~It took approximately 10 minutes to cut out a baluster, Then I rounded all of the corner with a 1/2” radius bit.

I’m kind of working backward, because you usually put the skirting on last,
but I didn’t have the 2’ X 6” material for the railing balusters yet, so that’s why I went this route.

so I rabbeted a 4” x 4” to rap around the metal post.

So, I’ve been working at this for two weekends and one week of after work time. I’m leaving to go to work at 6:30am, working until 6pm, then driving an hour to get to the new house, working until midnight or so, wash, rinse, repeat.
First thing I did was pull the mom-mobile (our minivan, which I have co-opted for the duration of this project!) up to my workshop and load it all in. I’m one of those guys who needs to be organized, and I figure that my first step would be ...

Well, it’s official, we’ve moved. This past Friday was the move day, and despite last minute issues, (the contractor who was dealing with the upstairs bathroom decided that he didn’t want to show up to finish the job, the company who we got the vanity from gave us totally inaccurate rough plumbing specs which required a complete re-do of the plumbing, etc. etc. etc… all will be revealed in coming blogs!) we were living in the house. I’ve been lax in posting, but for good reason. I’ve been putting in 14-16 hour days, 7 days a week since I started this project on 10/18…
I was able to take last week off from work, allowing me to get into a rhythm of work from 10am to 2am, sleep from 3am to 9am… Of course on the days where I did have to work at my real job, it was office from 8am to 6pm, house from 7pm to 1am. The biggest time chunk that I wish I had back was the hours upon hours of driving all ...
