Master Bedroom Floor

230 days ago by dustynewt | 3 comments »

The house sustained minor damage from wind and water during the hurricanes of the last few years. The outside is now sufficiently repaired. We are finally getting to the task of remodeling the inside. We have been living on the first floor of our house for what seems like years while we remodel the upstairs. It suffered the worst. The plan is to do the reverse when the upstairs is finished. Between work and unexpected projects (neccessities) the remodel is coming slow. We either have the m...

Front Porch Job

236 days ago by dustynewt | 3 comments »

I posted this blog on LumberJocks about seven months ago. I had to edit it to restore photos (I have changed my photo host) so while I was at it, I thought I would post it here for my first HomeReburbers blog. The first major problem (project) started when I walked out the front door of my house one day and my foot went right through the slate porch. It shocked me more than anything because I thought the slate was bedded with a solid concrete pad. We have lived here for 25 years. I have al...

First home refurbishing #1: First foreclosure house for refurbishing

196 days ago by Bill | 7 comments »

I have not been on the site much lately, but I do have a good excuse. I finally found a house to purchase a refurbish. While not a lot of work to do, there will be a few things needing done, primarily patching a few holes and painting. In April I looked through a number of houses. Many of these houses, while inexpensive, were not in good areas and/or needed a lot of work. By the time the house was fixed up, there would be no money to be made. With a declining housing market, that woul...

Building a porch. #7: The finished product!

176 days ago by Dick, & Barb Cain | 8 comments »

The porch is completed. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I learned something new about the finishing of new treated lumber. They don’t recommend waiting 60 to 90 days for the boards to dry anymore. They say by staining right away, it slows the drying process, & prevents cracking, & checking. I relate that to sealing the ends of lumber to prevent checking. We used Olympic semi-transparent oil stain that is water cleanup, pretty ...

Building a porch. #3: Applying the skirting!

177 days ago by Dick, & Barb Cain | 1 comment »

I’m kind of working backward, because you usually put the skirting on last, but I didn’t have the 2’ X 6” material for the railing balusters yet, so that’s why I went this route. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~I didn’t want to rely on the bolts alone to hold up the deck, so I rabbeted a 4” x 4” to rap around the metal post. Photos by Barb! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~...

The New House... #3: Progress... I hate wallpaper!

71 days ago by ryno101 | 8 comments »

So, I’ve been working at this for two weekends and one week of after work time. I’m leaving to go to work at 6:30am, working until 6pm, then driving an hour to get to the new house, working until midnight or so, wash, rinse, repeat. First thing I did was pull the mom-mobile (our minivan, which I have co-opted for the duration of this project!) up to my workshop and load it all in. I’m one of those guys who needs to be organized, and I figure that my first step would be ...

To be continued!

The New House... #6: Kitchen Nightmares - No, not the Gordon Ramsay kind...

47 days ago by ryno101 | 4 comments »

Well, it’s official, we’ve moved. This past Friday was the move day, and despite last minute issues, (the contractor who was dealing with the upstairs bathroom decided that he didn’t want to show up to finish the job, the company who we got the vanity from gave us totally inaccurate rough plumbing specs which required a complete re-do of the plumbing, etc. etc. etc… all will be revealed in coming blogs!) we were living in the house. There’s still enough to do t...

The New House... #5: A brief update...

56 days ago by ryno101 | 2 comments »

I’ve been lax in posting, but for good reason. I’ve been putting in 14-16 hour days, 7 days a week since I started this project on 10/18… I was able to take last week off from work, allowing me to get into a rhythm of work from 10am to 2am, sleep from 3am to 9am… Of course on the days where I did have to work at my real job, it was office from 8am to 6pm, house from 7pm to 1am. The biggest time chunk that I wish I had back was the hours upon hours of driving all ...
