I am adding a workshop in the back part of my garage. The shop in about 15×40. I have added a bathroom, storage room and have just installed doors and heater. I have the sink/toilet/shower just completed. I plan on doing an Acid Stain to the concrete. I haven’t done Acid Staining before but look forward to the challenge. Will keep updates coming. The house sustained minor damage from wind and water during the hurricanes of the last few years. The outside is now sufficiently repaired. We are finally getting to the task of remodeling the inside.
We have been living on the first floor of our house for what seems like years while we remodel the upstairs. It suffered the worst. The plan is to do the reverse when the upstairs is finished. Between work and unexpected projects (neccessities) the remodel is coming slow. We either have the m...

I’ve been really busy trying to learn SketchUp.
My Son needs a new front porch on his home.
I decided this would be a good way to learn SketchUp.
His old concrete steps have been gradually leaning, & it makes the whole house seem crooked.
He said if he sits on a step, he feels like he’s going to fall off.
This was quite an experience for me, because I’ve used a T-square, & triangles for so long.
This project took me an awfully long time, but I learn...

This past weekend, Mother’s Day weekend, I gave my wife what every mother wants: a silver “mother and family” necklace and a freshly-painted garage!MixologyOriginally I was planning on heading out to HD and buying a gallon or so of “oops” paint (ya know, the stuff that they mix by mistake and sell dirt cheap) for the walls. But then, a woodworker/remodeller friend of mine suggested a better approach. He keeps a 5 gallon bucket that he uses for all of his left ove...

It’s gonna be hotter than the hinges of Hades today, so I went out this morning and finished up the porch rails.
Project page coming, but I want to take a few more pictures with different light.

On the left is how it looks now, on the right is how it used to look. You may think it’s not an improvement, but if you look closely, on the blown-up version of the left, you can see a new lattice there.
When we moved in, the back yard had an awning, with lots of ferns and other low sun plants. Most of what we want to grow wants full sun, so we pulled out the awning, and we really need to replace the fence, but we haven’t gotten there yet. So this is forward enough that ho...

Last night I went to the auction in the town where I live and could not believe what they had on the auction block, it was a vintage beech workbench top with a wooden vice. It didn’t seem like no one wanted it so I made a starting bid of two dollars, and my bid turned out to be the only bid. So, I got this workbench top for two dollars. The top is in rough shape but I think I can bring it back with a little work and a new base.
Last week at this same auction, I was able to buy an older...

Now that the shop is pretty much complete and the weather’s turned a bit more spring-like, I’ve decided to tackle the garage. Since I no longer need it for woodworking, save the odd large-piece assembly, we’re going to revert the space back to a more traditional use: car, bike and outdoor-kid-toy-storage. In addition, we’ll be adding a workspace and storage for gardening tools andn supplies. I also plan to repaint the floor…hopefully this time it’ll last a ...

On the left, how it looked when we moved in, on the right, how it looks as of right now.
The ugly “security” door on the front has always bothered me. It’s indicative of a bad neighborhood, where people don’t trust their neighbors, and we were very sure that it was an over-reaction by a person growing old and settling into their fears, otherwise we wouldn’t have bought the place. Thus it’s been important to me that we replace it fairly quickly.
We&...

Last week, some door to door sales guys came by pitching replacement windows. I thought “this ought to be fun”, and scheduled an appointment. Surprisingly, they seemed to have a darned good deal, 6 Anlin windows, including a monster picture window, for $3200 installed. Poking around gave us a fairly good impression of Anlin windows relative to various other premium vinyl windows (ie: Milgard, etc), but as we dug further we started to think that vinyl wasn’t a look we liked.
