A bit of background… We (my wife and I) purchased our first house together in march of 2015 knowing that we would not move in until June. I talked her into a fixer based on the fact that myself and a buddy worked our way through college working for our landlord fixing up his old rentals and also flipping houses for him. So we swooped in and got a fixer out from underneath a local flipper because he was trying to nickel and dime the seller. What made this a good purchase is that the e...

The wife and I moved into an old family cottage on Mousam Lake in Maine a few years ago. It was last remodeled in 1973 when I was 18 years old. We did it all ourselves so I’m familiar with it. The place was nicely done in 70’s styled dark wall paneling and carpets. You know what I mean. We’ve been retired awhile now and it’s time to change things. We need to lighten things up and enlarge without changing the dimensions. We decided to combine two adjoining bedrooms int...

Caught with a little time between projects while casting off the last of a winter cold, I felt I should add an update to my last blog of “ As we had earlier given away an antique set we had had (for decades), the style looked right, the color looked right, the price was certainly right and we now had a room that needed furnishing. So here they are. Wall decorations still seem a bit sparse but that may be more of a reflection on where our tastes have been moving these last six or se...
I and my friend (master blacksmith) made chisels and a slick for my upcoming Timber Framing project. He made the steel parts. I made handles and leather tip guards. In my opinion chisels and the slick came out very high quality. So the idea was born – to make my own Timber Framing hand tool workshop were we could manufacture high quality fully hand made tools. Maybe there are anyone who can give me some advice or some dealer/manager or craftsmen who are interested to take apart in my...

So I have been working on this project for a couple weeks already but I figured I’d catch you all up to speed. Here are the facts: 1. I live in a condo in Gilbert, Arizona.2. The condo is about 30 yrs old.3. There is an enclosed porch on each unit and most of them need some work… At first I decided that I would just replace the parts that I thought were the worst off. I had hoped that I would be able to make it work with as little effort and $$ as possible. Plans cha...
Once I closed in new exterior wall, I framed in the old porch floor area to bring it up flush with the interior floors. From there, taking down the old wall was pretty easy; just had lots of electrical to re-route. Framing in the new wall to divide the space into a Foyer and Dining Room Onto the drywall! Pretty straightforward at this point. I pulled new electrical into the basement for outlets, ceiling lights, wall sconces, 3 way switches, outdoor lights…lots of ne...
