Foundation Repairs

43 days ago by 3fingerpat | 2 comments »

Well, thought I would start a new blog to document the foundation repairs that are necessary on my old house. We have had several contractors submit bids and provide their recommendations. There are actually two foundations on the house, the first is the original house foundation and the second was for the addition that was added some time in the 70’s we think, not really sure when. The newer foundation has been having blowout at several points, which one contractor showed me was due...

Garage Conversion #1: Additions to the Household

91 days ago by Olaf Gradin | 3 comments »

In just a few weeks, we’ll have a new baby girl to bring into our shrinking home. In just a few weeks, I hope to have added a recreation / office room to our house to compensate. I’m using my two-car garage and cutting it half such that a car would not fit within its depth. The outer half will be my workshop while the inner half will be a playroom. My task is not, on the surface, too difficult save for the fact that I’ve never done this kind of work before and I’m ...

Kitchen remodel #6: New Kitchen Floor Installed

114 days ago by 3fingerpat | 8 comments »

The contractor removed the old floor tiles and installed the new floor tiles while I was out of town on a business trip. It was nice not having to deal with the noise and the disruption but I had a lot of work to do to get the room ready by removing all the stuff from the kitchen, not a lot of fun.The new floor turned out fine but the grout color does not match what we selected, bummer! The grout is gray but we wanted a light tan color, the installed grout doesn’t match the color palate...

150 days ago by 3fingerpat | 2 comments »

What started out as just replacing a worn out old fence has now turned into remodeling our kitchen. During the residing of the outside wall of the kitchen, we knocked off a couple of tiles from the kitchen counter and back splash. And since I had replaced both kitchen windows and trim during the outside wall residing, we decided to just keep going and remodel the whole kitchen. So we had granite counters installed to replace 4” ceramic tiles and a new stainless steel sink installed t...

Master Bedroom Floor

231 days ago by dustynewt | 3 comments »

The house sustained minor damage from wind and water during the hurricanes of the last few years. The outside is now sufficiently repaired. We are finally getting to the task of remodeling the inside. We have been living on the first floor of our house for what seems like years while we remodel the upstairs. It suffered the worst. The plan is to do the reverse when the upstairs is finished. Between work and unexpected projects (neccessities) the remodel is coming slow. We either have the m...

Reclaiming Mahogany for Baseboards #1: Breaking down the beams

265 days ago by Dan Lyke | 8 comments »

We picked up a bunch of Peruvian mahogany box beams off of Craigslist. They’ve been sitting in the attic, waiting for that task to come up on the queue. It did. Ow, do my hands hurt, both from all the splinters and cuts, and from gripping the pliers to pull those nails. There are a few nails in there yet, so I’m going to have to be very careful as I fire up the router, but left to be done is to select some of the thicker boards from the narrow stacks, cut them to 4R...
